The traditional German kitchen is famous for a lot of meat – often in the form of sausage – and a huge variety of cakes. Nevertheless, in the last couple of decades, the German kitchen strongly changed and got influenced by the globalization. However, traditional regional dishes and specialties are still cultivated and developed or rediscovered. In 2015, German restaurants were among the three best in the world behind Japan and France – 282 restaurants with a Michelin star from which a lot of them offer specialties from other countries. Some of the German chefs in these restaurants are also very famous tv cooks.
German chef Tim Mälzer was born in January 1971. The cook took his training in Intercontinental Hamburg and later on worked together with Jamie Oliver in the Hotel Ritz in London. After moving back to Germany, he kept on working in different, famous restaurants in Hamburg.
Tim Mälzer became very famous in Germany in 2003, when he started his own cooking show called Schmeckt nicht, gibt’s nicht (= Untasty doesn’t exist), which had been broadcasted until 2007. He is also the author of almost a dozen cookbooks and is running three restaurants in Germany – one in Hamburg, Düsseldorf, and Frankfurt. Since 2016, his show Kitchen Impossible is on tv.
Steffen Henssler was born in September 1972. In 1999, the trained German chef invested a lottery win of around 22.000 Euro into vocational training as a professional sushi chef in the famous Sushi Academy in Los Angeles. In 2001, he and his father opened a restaurant in Hamburg called Henssler & Henssler and in 2009 a second one called ONO by Steffen Henssler. In 2017, a third restaurant followed, which is focused on fast food and fish. He is also the owner of a cooking school.
In 2004, German chef Steffen Henssler started appearing on tv like for instance in 2007 with his first own cooking show called Ganz & Gar Henssler ( = Ganz & Gar) is a German wordplay which means, the food is well cooked and that people are going to see the “real/ complete” Henssler). Between 2013 and 2017, he was hosting a famous German cooking show called Grill den Henssler, in which German celebrities had to cook against each other.
Horst Lichter was born in January 1962. The trained German chef opened his first restaurant called Oldiethek in 1990. Horst Lichter exhibited many cars, motorcycles, antiques, junk and other stuff in the bar. He didn’t provide his guests any menu, but verbally offered them different variations on every evening.
Horst Lichter had his first tv appearance in a cooking show from German tv presenter Johannes B. Kerner. Between 2006 and 2017, he was presenter and chef of his own show Lafer! Lichter! Lecker! with the Austrian chef Johann Lafer. Horst Lichter is the author of many cooking books and advertising for different brands.
Alfongs Schubeck was born in May 1949 and is one of the most famous Geman chefs. The adoptive son of innkeeper Sebastian Schubeck engaged the young Schubeck in his pub and persuaded him for training to become a cook. In 1980, Schuhbeck took over the Kurhausstüberl in Waging, which later on became an insider tip for celebrities from Munich and Salzburg and one of the top restaurants in the village. Soon, he became a driving force in the company and convinced the guests with his cooking skills. Finally, Schuhbeck gained the reputation of a “celebrity cook” and soon started his own business which included the opening of restaurants, party service, a cooking school, and a spices shop.
He is a regular guest in many different German tv shows and author of around 20 books.
Cornelia Poletto was born in August 1971. The daughter of a medical professor completed training as a hotel specialist. She started her first restaurant in 2000 with her former husband Remigio Poletto in Hamburg. In 2011, she opened her own restaurant called Cornelia Poletto. Since 2007, Cornelia Poletto has her own cooking show and – next to many other German chefs – is part of the tv show Küchenschlacht. Since 2015, she is married to former German railway head Rüdiger Grube.
