Suzanne Bernert: The German Actress in Bollywood

Suzanne Bernert is said to be the only real German actress in Bollywood. In the film The Accidental Prime Minister (2019), she was playing politician Sonia Gandhi, widow of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and daughter-in-law of Indira Gandhi. The Italian born Sonia Gandhi was assumed to become the next prime minister of India in 2004, but she surprisingly renounced in favor of Manmohan Singh. The film is based on a book from 2014 called The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh by Sanjaya Baru.

  • Suzanne Bernert was born in Detmold, Germany. She grew up in Grünenbach, Westallgäu, close to the border of Austria. Grünbach is a municipality with around 1500 inhabitants. Westallgäu is one of the sunniest places in Germany and famous for hiking tourism.
  • At the age of 16, she started a three-year acting course with Heidelotte Diehl in Berlin. Heidelotte Diehl is a German tv actress. Bernert is also trained in ballet and Lavani dance.
  • She moved to Mumbai in 2005 to pursue a career as an actress.
  • Suzanne Bernert’s husband is Indian actor and director Akhol Mishra. According to the newspaper Der Westallgäuer, the two like to go on holidays in Bernert’s hometown in Gründbach in the county Lindau, where Bernert’s parents are still living. Bernert and her husband also stand up for Indian theatre and are leading a theatre group.
  • She played the Helena in Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat, a role for which she got praised a lot. 
  • She is also an activist doing social work for the human rights organization Sulabh International. 
  • In 2018, Suzanne Bernert received a CAMA award for International Diva in Bollywood and an award for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema and Television at the Rajasthan International Film Festival.
  • She speaks German, English, French, Spanish, Italien, Hindi, Marathi and Bengali.
